ASD - With 1 out of 110 children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States today (a new case is diagnosed almost every 15 minutes) parents and professionals must strive to identify those children at risk as soon as possible. New research following newborns who have a sibling with ASD suggests that an infant who is later diagnosed with ASD shows evidence of developmental delays in social interaction and communication by 6-12 months of age. Early identification allows treatment to begin immediately for these children, offering the greatest potential for them to live a full and meaningful life.

Mold, Asthma, Dust Mites, Schools and Indoor Air

  • Asthma Triggers - Asthma attacks can be triggered by things like mold growing on your shower curtain or tiny dust mites that live in blankets, pillow, or your child's stuffed animals. Learn more about things that might trigger an asthma attack and what you can do to get rid of them and help your child stay healthy. NOATTACKS.ORG

  • Mold - These microscopic organisms are fungus that grows into organic matter. When they are large enough they are visible; we call it mold or mildew. They reproduce by spores that travel long distances. We can find them in dark, damp and warm locations. They need moisture to live; basements, bathrooms, bark of trees and fallen leaves, and poorly ventilated areas are their favorite spot. "Moisture control is the key to control mold. Dry water damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. If mold is a problem in your home, get rid of excess water or moisture and then clean up the mold." EPAGOV.MOLD

Asthma

  • "About 23 million people, including 6.8 million children, have asthma and 12 million people report having an asthma attack in the past year.
  • Asthma accounts for nearly 17 million physician office and hospital visits, and nearly 2 million emergency department visits each year."I just read the EPA Spanish version and it has this information: DATA ON ASTHMA:
  • Asthma results in 2 million visits to the emergency room and 5,000 deaths annually nationwide in the United States.

  • Asthma contributed more than 14 million days of school absences in 2000. The costs of asthma (medical costs and low productivity) resulting in $ 14 billion in 2002.

  • Approximately 2 million Hispanics in the U.S. have asthma and the effect was disproportionate among Puerto Ricans: The number of asthma among Puerto Ricans is 80% higher than among non-Hispanic whites. The prevalence of asthma attacks is highest among Puerto Ricans. SALUD HISPANA

Dust Mites and Dust Allergy

  • Dust allergy is a sensitivity to the waste particles and body fragments of dust mites. Everyone is irritated by the exposure but only some have an allergic reaction.
  • dust mites live in soft materials; they are tiny arachnids that are relative to spiders and ticks.
  • They eat the dead skin scales that we shed. They need humidity to survive, that is why beds provide the warmth, darkness and humidity that they need.
  • Try to remove carpets but avoid shampooing them.
  • The moisture increases mite growth. "Dust mites are too small to be seen but can be found in almost every home, school, and building.
  • Dust mites can be found in carpeting, upholstered furniture, stuffed animals or toys, pillows, beds.
  • Make sure schools are dusted and vacuumed thoroughly and regularly, and keep rooms free of clutter. If stuffed toys are present, ensure they are washable and wash them regularly in hot water." EPA.GOV.SCHOOLS.ASTHMA

Allergy Treatment

  • There are many alternatives; avoiding the exposure to substance to which you are allergic, getting allergy injections of the substances to which you are allergic, medication, cleaning, encasing anything that cannot be wiped or washed and dehumidify the indoor air if it is not dry keeping humidity below 50%, but, first you have to find out what you are allergic to. Consult your doctor.

Animal Dander Allergy

  • Cats, dogs and other pets, produce proteins in their skin that become air-born and cause allergy.
  • These particles remain suspended in the air for long periods. Schools, where pets have never been present, have animal allergen levels brought there on the cloth of pet owners.
  • The pet dander can remain for up to 6 months after the pet has been removed.

Mercury

  • Salmon, Sardines and herrings have lower mercury levels.
  • Sushi, Tuna, Tilefish and Swordfish has more mercury. Eat them once a week or less.

BPA or Bisphenol

  • Industrial chemical used primarily to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins.
  • BPA is in canned foods, some water bottles and plastic containers.
  • Choose fresh food whenever possible or choose food that is packaged in glass or in juice-like packages.
  • The FDA has shifted its stance on Bisphenol A (BPA) and said that exposure to the chemical is of "some concern" for infants and children.

Pesticides

  • Some kids are vulnerable and may affect them more than others.
  • Autism, abnormalities, obesity, can be some of the things that you can avoid.
  • Buying organic reduces pesticide exposure.
  • Don't buy nectarines, strawberries, grapes and potatoes if possible; for a complete llist see below.

- Parkinson's Disease Associated With Pesticide Exposure In French Farm Workers

- Journal Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: "We know pesticides–sprays, strips, or 'bombs,' are found in at least 85 percent of households, but obviously not all the children in these homes develop cancer. What this study suggests is an association between pesticide exposure and the development of childhood."

Pesticides in Produce

Apples, Bell Peppers, Celery, Cherries, Grapes, Nectarines, Peaches, Pears, Potatoes, Red Raspberries, Spinach, Strawberries; should be organic, if possible.. - Wash and dry all produce with Organic Citrus Veggie wash.

Keep it Simple! Don't Complicate. - Let's join forces and demand better quality of food; No Hormones, No Antibiotics, Labels disclosing them. Some products that are labeled "Natural" contain hormones and antibiotics. That is NOT natural

  • Don't use perfume, sprays or perfumed soap or products.

  • Do NOT fumigate your home; if you have to, cover everything with plastic and wash before letting your child inside.

  • Don't allow smoking.

  • Don't allow outside shoes inside your home.

  • As soon as the children come from school, change their clothes.

  • Teach them not to touch their face and to wash their hands.

  • For people whose asthma or allergy is triggered by dust mites, use Dust Mite Covers to encase your mattresses, pillows and box spring.
  • Yoga, T'ai Chi and Meditation are wonderful for everyone, but specially for asthma and different health issues. See T'ai Chi clinical reasearch

  • Meat slicers, tonsils, etc. are frequently used for meat and cheese products
  • Many Restaurants use butter after they broil or cook fish or meat to give it extra flavor.
  • Ask the waiter to see the Chef or the ingredients when ordering in a Restaurant. Simple pasta can contain eggs or made in facility that handles peanuts, eggs or dairy products.

Choking Hazards
- Hot Dogs: 17% of emergency visits of choking children are because of hot dogs.
- Hot dogs, carrots and grapes are the most common choking hazards.
- Do NOT allow your children to put uncooked beans in their mouth. Read the "bean section".

Underwire Bras for Kids

Please help stop the sale of Underwire Bras for Kids. Stores like J.C. Penney Marshalls, among others, sell underwire bras for 10 year old girls and up.

Physical Effects of Underwire

- The wire under a bra presses directly on two neurolymphatic reflexes. One reflex lies under the right breast and leads to the liver and gall bladder, while the reflex under the left breast goes to the stomach. Pressure on these points at first create a stimulating affect, but over time decrease the function of these organs. Some doctors believe the rate of breast cancer in the West is higher than in other regions of the world due to poorly fitting bras, with underwire posing a primary concern. As bras place pressure on the lymph nodes and block the lymph glands from draining, toxins are not freely removed from the body, possibly increasing the risk of breast cancer. It is also believed that bras cause the breasts to overheat, causing impaired health much like tight briefs lower sperm count in men. How Well Does Your Bra Fit? The next time you take your bra off, look in the mirror for red lines. Check under each breast, along the sides, and on top of your shoulders. Ill-fitting bras leave pressure marks and may constrict lymph flow and circulation. It is recommended that women remove their bra for at least 12 hours in each 24-hour period. Better breast health is just around the corner by doing two simple things: 1) Purchase bras without wire; and 2) cut the fabric at the end of your current underwire and slip the wire out. Pizza Dough

1 3/4 teaspoons active dry yeast, 2 1/2 cups bread flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 1/2 Tablespoon olive oil, 1 cup + 2 Tbs. water. You can substitute half of the bread flour for wheat flour. Mix in bread-maker or by hand until you form a ball; placed dough on greased 12 inch pizza; keep part of the dough to make a smaller pizza. Let it rise. Oven: 400 F. You can bake it for 10 min., then add the toppings and bake it for 15 more minutes; or, add the toppings and bake for 20 minutes. Toppings: Organic Tomato sauce, Organic frozen spinach (just a little bit until the kids get use to the color and flavor), Organic broccoli, black olives. Put some olive oil on the top when you serve it. Enjoy! This is an easy recipe, but, if you run out of time, have frozen Pita Bread. You can make individual pizzas. Just read the ingredients. Some of them are made in facilities that handle eggs or milk.

  • Quick Pizza: Buy Pita (check ingredients). Freeze. With a dry knife separate the pita; it will freeze together. Heat on one side, turn heat for a moment on the other side. Let the children add organic tomato sauce, sliced tomatos, olives, veggies, etc., finish with some olive oil and put it back in the oven. Great for fast healthy veggies.

Cooking Yummy Egg, Dairy and Nut-Free Foods

Dip Mexican Style

1 Ripe tomato, chopped, 1/2 Onion chopped, Juice of 1/2 Lemon Optional: Salt, green seeded chile's and cilantro chopped. This Dip can be served cold with black organic tortilla chips or used as a sauce when you cook.

Tortilla Soup (Sopa Azteca) or Mexican Chilaquiles

1/2 Can Organic Tomato sauce, Water, Olive oil, Black Organic Tortilla Chips or tortillas cut and baked. Optional: Salt, chicken, chopped onions, avocado, cilantro. Boil the liquids, add the optional ingredients. When ready to serve, place the Tortilla Chips cut in half, inside the soup plates and pour the soup on top. Serve immediately. If you want to make Chilaquiles: use less water and heat the soup with the tortillas inside until the liquid is almost dry. Serve and put chopped onions and cilantro on top if desired. Chilaquiles are served as a side dish. You can serve them with re-fried beans, chicken or as a side dish with eggs if not allergic.

Beans; the healthy alternative to protein

A great alternative to protein, the beans, squash and corn is planted together in Mexico. In some countries, the beans are planted together with peanuts. Clean the beans, as pieces of stones or debris can be in the package. Dry red beans and kidney beans have a harmful toxin if eaten uncooked; Phytohaemagglutinin. It is destroyed by cooking them. Don't allow your children to put them in their mouth raw. - Place the quantity you want of clean, washed beans in a pot. Cover them with water and add one extra inch of water on top of them. Cover them and let them absorb the water overnight. Next day, rinse them, put fresh water covering them completely and add one inch of water approx. on top. Add olive oil, onion and salt optional. Vinegar added after the beans are cooked will act as an enzyme to help digest the beans. Also, you can add coriander, anise and/or cumin to prevent flatulence. Do not add sugar! Cook them covered for one hour on medium heat.

  • Bean Soup: Blend the beans, add olive oil before you serve them and put tortilla chips on top, cilantro and cut onion.
  • Fried Beans: Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil and add chopped onions (optional), and beans. Served with chips or Make Bean burritos. Serve with Mexican Salsa.
  • Lentil Soup: Clean the lentils and add water to cover them, cut carrots and celery. Optional garlic and salt. Add organic tomato sauce and a little bit of olive oil. Cover and let cook until tender. You can also serve it as a dip: use less water and blend. Serve with a little bit of olive oil. Some children enjoy the Lentil Soup with pieces of banana.
  • Carrot Soup: Boil organic carrots, blend them with the water they were boiled. Add a little of organic Tomato sauce, Olive oil and salt. You can add rice milk. I put some Smart Balance Light when I am ready to serve it. The "Light" does not have milk; but, read the ingredients. Some products change their recipes.

  • Tomato Salad: Cut organic riped tomatoes, add olive oil, drops of lime and salt.

  1. When cooking with tomato sauce, add some drops of vinegar instead of sugar to control the acidity: It is healthier. I like balsamic vinegar because it is made with white grapes, however, there are many different kinds.
  2. Vinegar as household cleaner; buy the cheaper version to clean floors (mixed with warm water), toilets, coffee maker, polishing brass or bronze, etc.
  3. Vinegar and Baking soda as a drain cleaner. Put baking soda in drains and toilets, add vinegar and watch the scum dissolve.
  4. Vinegar added after the beans are cooked will act as an enzyme to help digest the beans.

While you have your oven on:

  • Quick Pizza: Buy Pita (check ingredients). Freeze. With a dry knife separate the pita; it will freeze together. Heat on one side, turn heat for a moment on the other side. Let the children add organic tomato sauce, sliced tomatos, olives, veggies, etc., finish with some olive oil and put it back in the oven. Great for fast healthy veggies.
  • Place cut and washed potatoes with skin in a plastic bag with olive oil, a little bit of salt. Move them around the plastic bag until they are covered. Discard the plastic bag. Bake approx. 40 min. until done. Turn them a couple of times.
  • Do the same with carrots, zucchini, asparagus, etc.. Less time! (Carrots will be very sweet.)
  • Sweet Potatoes washed and cut: boil, smash and add olive oil.

IMMUNE BOOSTING SOUP - From Dr. Mao's "Secrets of Longevity" by Dr. Maoshing Ni
- Simmer these ingredients for 30 minutes: cabbage, carrots, fresh ginger, onion, oregano, shiitake mushrooms (if dried, they must be soaked first), the seaweed of your choice, and any type of squash in chicken or vegetable stock. Cabbage can increase your body’s ability to fight infection, ginger supports healthy digestion, and seaweed cleanses the body. Shiitake mushrooms contain coumarin, polysaccharides, and sterols, as well as vitamins and minerals that increase your immune function, and the remaining ingredients promote general health and well-being. Eat this soup every other day to build a strong and healthy immune system. Dr. Mao

Let's Demand a Change!
- The federal law that should protect us from health-harming chemicals just doesn't work. Since 1976, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has required safety testing on only 200 of the more than 80,000 chemicals on the market. We need a stronger chemical law to keep our families safe and healthy.* Mounting scientific evidence points to widespread exposure to chemicals that can cause serious and adverse impacts on human health, particularly for children. Safer Chemicals Healthy Families make your voice count. TAKE ACTION

When our grand-daughter was a baby, we were told by the Pediatrician that the reason she cried so much was because she had colic's. It took several months and a terrible allergic reaction, with a visit to the Hospital, to realize that she had food allergies. Now, when I see a baby crying and parents desperate, I want to tell them, 'do not use perfume, do not use chemicals or fumigate, please check to see if your baby is allergic.' Today, at 7 years old, she reads all labels and is very careful, but, she accepted a chewy Sweetart (Wonka/Nestle) and it had Egg albumen; she had a terrible reaction. Ingredients are changed constantly.
